ARCHITECT: UNIDENTIFIED (16th Century)

I remember the first time I saw this structure and wondered how they let the cheap souvenir stands set up in this historic building.
After doing a little research, I learned that it was originally built in the 16th century and was intended for sales of silk and luzury goods and then for famous straw hats.
I guess the contemporary usage is not that different from the it's orignial intent.
There are a couple pieces of statuary that have a little interest, but otherwise it was only interesting to me as a couriosity.

We are told that statues were planned for the two niches at all four corners, but only three were completed.

Custom has it that rubbing the nose and placing a coin in the mouth so that it falls trough the grate brings good luck.
